Christiane D. - Curator

Bio

Christiane D, poet, singer, songwriter, visual artist, playwright, cultural advocate, …instigator.   Focused passion is the thread that ties all of her work together. She has curated several exhibits at various venues in the Pittsburgh area and beyond. Her acumen as an administrator for her many arts projects are widely acknowledged. She is an active arts advocate and a profound artist. Many of her efforts have been acknowledged in the press.

She is the co-founder and former Executive Director of Sun Crumbs, a trans-cultural multi-arts non-profit. Sun Crumbs mission was to bring Artists and Communities together by presenting, mentoring, promoting and sponsoring the work of Pittsburgh artists. As part of Sun Crumbs programming, she curated many successful exhibits: Loaded: does Art make people kill; Point A to Point B: a male artist examines bulimia from a male perspective; Natural Selection: creating a natural environment with refuse; and Locker: beauty of the male nude.

She debuted her play Saffronia at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theatre and was recently seen as the narrator in the Playhouse REP's, "Mother Courage". Her visual work has been shown in Women's Work at 709 Penn Avenue and Bloom at SPACE gallery in the Cultural Trust District. She poetically shared the stage with Sonia Sanchez as part of the She Said series and is working to release a cd of her spoken word. Her band Soma Mestizo, global dub rebels, has released their latest musical effort, Telomere, and their Tattoo dub track is featured on Indigenous Resistance records. In the fall of 2006, she will curate an exhibit, POWER, the feminine definition of power, at the Future Tenant. She was recently honored, at the New Hazlett Theatre's gala, "Celebrating Women in the Arts".

The curator hopes that, through the Power exhibit, the general public will become more aware of the quality of works created by women artists. Further, the Power exhibit provides an opportunity for women artists to network and share ideas that have impacted their development as artists.
